Russian Filigree

Learn the secret of Russian filigree, the technique of tension fitted, open back filigree. Through extensive demonstrations and hands-on exploration, you will learn how to make delicate scalloped wire, create a pendant and a finger ring, and begin a bead. Discover the necessary steps and tricks to ensure success and fun through this exquisite technique. The workshop includes discussion and demonstrations of Victoria’s contemporary sculptural jewelry and functional objects and other three-dimensional possibilities with the process. Those familiar with the technique through Victoria's Russian Filigree DVD will have the opportunity to work on more advanced projects. Participants must know how to solder with a torch. Materials Included:
  • -Russian Filigree Powdered Solder (jars available for sale after the workshop)
    -1.5ft 16 gauge round sterling wire
    -16 inches 16 gauge square sterling wire
    -2ft 18 gauge square sterling wire
    -.75 oz 26 gauge round fine silver wire
Students Must Bring:
  • Each Student will need the tools below to complete the class projects. The studio has all of these for students to share however if you want to be able to go home and do this work you'll need to have them! Also it's nice to have your own tools in a class like this. So if you have them bring them, if you don't, don't stress-out, we have them AND remember we sell many of these tools in our studio store and as a student you get a discount! I've indicated which tools we sell below.
    -Fine pointed tweezers AA or MM Boley style. Very important piece of equipment! (studio store) These should be very pointed, not have teeth, and must never have been used for soldering! They will be used for forming the tiny filler wires.
    -Compressed charcoal block (may be ordered from any supplier but must be "compressed" type) (studio store)
    -Joyce Chen kitchen shears or other very sharp scissors
    -Small steel bench block (Every student needs one, very important!) (studio store)
    -Round, flat, and long fine chain nose pliers (Lindstrom or Swanstrom.)
    -Sharpie marker (studio store)
    -Round ring mandrel (studio store)
    -Round bezel mandrel
    -Rawhide Mallet (studio store)
    -Saw Frame & 2/0 Blades (studio store)
    -Flat and 1/2 round needle files (studio store)
