Buckles, Bolos and Barbed Wire

These three iconic pieces of personal adornment lend themselves to unlimited design possibilities. Although they obviously have their roots in the traditions of the Old West, in this workshop you will be challenged to reinterpret them into your own personal style. There will be plenty of sawing, soldering and fabrication with which to hone your jewelry making skills and maybe learn a new technique or two along the way.

Prerequisites:
  • Beginning Series or equivalent required.

    -bezel wire

    Barbed Wire Cuff:
    -22g sterling silver sheet (50 x 50mm)
    -#4 sterling silver triangle wire 156mm (x2)
    -16g sterling silver wire (6”)
    -a variety of pattern wire for embellishments

    Belt Buckle:
    -22g sterling silver sheet (2”x3”)
    -22g jeweler's brass sheet (2”x3”)
    -22g sterling sheet (1.5” x 1.5”)
    -10g sterling silver slotted wire (12”)
    -sterling silver twist wire (as needed)
    -24g sterling sheet 4mm x 20mm x 2
    -10g sterling wire 70mm

    For Bolo:
    -6ply braided leather bolo cord (42”)
    -22g sterling silver sheet (50mm x 50mm)
    -24g sterling silver sheet (30mm x 27mm) x2
    -24g sterling silver sheet (10mm x 10mm) x2
    -14g sterling silver half-round wire (72mm)
    -14g sterling silver twist wire (72mm)
    -14g sterling silver wire (120mm)
    -6mm cabochon x2
    -6mm bezel cup x2
Students Must Bring:
  • -materials kit fee $130 payable to instructor cash or check only
    -jewelers saw and blades (#2/0-4/0)
    -calipers – digital calipers can be found online or at Harbor Freight for around $20

    -For Cuff bring a cabochon of your choosing no larger than 30mm in any direction.
    -For Buckle bring a cabochon, coin or other object you might want to attach to the buckle. It should fit on a 1.5” x 1.5” back plate with room for embellishments.
    -For Bolo bring a cabochon of your choosing that will fit on a 2” x 2” base with sufficient room left around the stone for embellishments. If you want to do a stone-on-stone setting, bring a second smaller cabochon for that.

    -Stones will also be available to purchase.
